Autumn Cranberry Orange Shrub

Shrub cocktails are on trend at the moment, and we can easily see why.  The vinegar in the shrub syrup brings out the sweetness of the autumn fruit without being overly sweet.  The acidity of the vinegar lends a complex flavor to the cocktail and complements the bourbon perfectly.  Try it this weekend!

Autumn Cranberry Orange Shrub ~ 1.5 cups

1/2 c. fresh orange juice
1 c. fresh cranberries
1/2 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. apple cider vinegar

1) In a sauce pan add orange juice, fresh cranberries, sugar and cinnamon. Bring to a simmer and simmer for 10 minutes, until cranberries pop.  Press mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl, and add cider, mixing thoroughly.  Place in a far in the refrigerator until ready to use.
2) To make the cocktail, add ice to a highball glass and add 1 oz. orange cranberry mixture, 2 oz. bourbon, 1/2 oz. Grand Marnier, 2 drops orange bitters, and 4 oz. club soda.   Stir thoroughly and serve with a slice of orange.
